I think that creative writing is great and my experience so far of the genre fiction also has been awesome. In this blog post I will be comparing my experiences with this drama compared to other free dramas such as creative non-fiction, drama, and poetry.
So far fiction has been good but also challenging because of the way it is done. It can be very long in length including if you wanted to write a book, especially if you wanted to write a book because it’s upwards of around 50,000 words which is a lot.
So, I’ve decided to start a book project a couple of years ago over lockdown and never really would have realised that it would amass so many words: currently sitting at 25,000 words. It currently is also eight chapters long. I think because of my imagination able to create a book being a pantser so as you call it writing on the fly without a plot outline – which is the way I prefer to do things.
So how do I think this drama compares to the other three genres of creative writing? I feel like it could be the most deep in terms of skill level required to achieve a good result (although the other three can be) as well as this I find this genre is the easiest to start a project and never finish it. What’s hard I think is starting a book project and following it through to publication and completion – the hardest part because as a writer sometimes you second guess yourself tell yourself that you’re no good when everyone has a unique voice, and everyone has something to present to the world.
It was only last year that discovered an event for writers called NaNoWriMo. This stands for National novel writing month and for this month the challenge is to write your first draft on a novel which is upwards of 50,000 words. This I think is really challenging as you must have a writing goal each day to write a certain number of words.
I have a unique perspective on the genre of fiction like many writers do but now also because I know how to write in two languages meaning that I have decided to start writing a short story in Chinese as well.
The most challenging aspect of writing a story in another language is the fact that you are less familiar in this language than your native one. This means when you express yourself sometimes in writing you may not know the exact words or write it grammatically correct.
When writing in your native language you have a better instinct of what could be grammatically correct and you able to use a wider range of vocabulary to express yourself in writing.
My goal with writing generally is to write every day, so that I can keep up the habit of writing and continue to enjoy it. I generally now use voice recognition software instead of typing on a keyboard because of my repetitive strain injury I incurred a few years ago.
Conclusion:
What about you? Are you also into writing fiction? Let me know in the comments below.
