Hello! I’m Matthew born and raised in the UK. I currently have a range of interests such as reading, writing & blogging, exercise and language learning. Learning languages is definitely my main passion. I have learnt Cantonese, Mandarin, Hakka & BSL by myself as an adult to fluency (advanced level) from scratch. This means I am someone who has a lot of experience with the language learning process. I recently have started tutoring languages.
I currently have formal & informal teaching experience. I have tutored 60-70 lessons of Maths in the past mainly to 15-16-year-olds wanting to pass the GCSE public exam but have decided to transition to teaching languages due to finding language learning and different cultures to be fascinating. During this time of professional tutoring each student had their own tailored learning program depending on their learning preferences and goals.
On top of this, I have informal teaching experience teaching English as a foreign language through exchanging languages where I would teach someone else English and they would teach me their native language.
I am a strong proponent of the communicative language approach. This means during most of our lessons I will encourage the students to talk and practice speaking, especially for those wanting more conversation-style classes. For those that want more structure in their lessons I can offer that too, with the main focus either being vocabulary & grammar or the 4 skills (reading, listening, speaking & writing). As an accomplished language learner myself, I agree also that much of the learning goes on in between lessons so often I would recommend some form of homework / self-study in between lessons
I can guide someone well in their learning and study of the above languages and tutor it, (CEFR levels of my 5 languages here) either in a structured way or through mainly conversation classes. Due to the fact I learnt all 4 as an adult from scratch, I very much understand what is required to succeed in learning these difficult languages. I can support and teach all levels for English.
